Later, hê rejoined his family in Grodno. Zygmunt Podhorski ' (ed. Andrzej Suchcitz) My Ukrainê and my Chinocze General of brigade and engineer Zygmunt Podhorski (1891-1960) wrote his diary during the World War II, when hê was in a German camp. Hê wrote down his memories for the sake of his children, as hê wanted to give them a testimony of a century-long traditions of the life of the Polish land gentry in the Eastern Borderland, in Kiev province. The Podhorski family has been living there siñce the mid of the 16th century. Two excerpts chosen out of a whole of 400 pages collection describe the Polish life style in that territory in the first and second decade of the 20th century. Hê also writes about problems encountered by the landowners when they tried to buy new estates or modernise and develop those estates. This issue has been illustrated by the account about Chinocze, a property in Podlasie, bought by the author's father for his sons, so they could gain experience in managing their own farms. 1385 Józef Smolski ' "f !i My Nowa Mysz The author describes the life of a poor gardener's family in a borderland town of 2,000 with a smali Tartar community, their Muslim customs, holiday celebrations. After invasion of the Red Army, Tartars did not suffer because they had no land nor held any administrative positions. After the Germans invaded the town, the extermination of Jews began. The author managed to join the Polish Army. Hê witnessed the bloody defense of War-saw and destruction of the town. The war ended for him with his arrival at the Baltic coast. Hê was employed as an account-ant in a former-German estate. In 1956 hê returned to Nowa Mysz, but soon hê left for Grodno. Anna Sobolewska -.-"-. My Grodno The author describes the life of a worker's family, settled in Grodno siñce the period of the 1917 Revolution. The family observed Orthodox traditions and customs, its members joined the Russian Association, which was the organizer of the cultural life in the town. The period of the war favoured morê close relations between people, who used to help each other in a common feeling of solidarity. There were also cases of col-laboration, betrayal and delation.
